Evaluation 3&4

Q3.  What Have You Learned From Your Audience Feedback?

We have uploaded a short video of our overall audience feedback and what we have learnt as a whole

We used a number of different methods to promote our teaser trailer in order for us to receive feedback on our final product. The main promotion scheme we used was the world wide video-sharing website youtube; where anyone can upload, share and view videos from all over the world. As YouTube is well known all over the world as a video source we believed this was a perfect way to get our teaser trailer out to the public. Despite this being our main way of publishing our teaser trailer we also shared our video through many other interactive means. We were able to share our teaser trailer on the social networking sites facebook and twitter which was a great way to share our teaser trailer with our friends and family. The good thing about these social network sites is that they are linked to YouTube and people who view they video on either facebook or twitter can click the link provided and leave a like, dislike or comment. Even if they do not wish to go directly to the link, facebook enables users to leave likes and comments directly on the facebook page which can also be used as feedback. Blackberry is very popular in today’s day and age with a high percentage of teenagers owning one. We used the advantage of many people owning a blackberry device to broadcast the video link to all our contacts owning a blackberry using its instant messenger service blackberry messenger. This would allow people to view, comment, like and share our video whenever and wherever they are directly from their mobile phones instead of having to access a computer.

Youtube allows us to view the video statistics of every video we upload; this was really useful in seeing how successful our teaser trailer was to the public. We not only were able to see the views that are video achieved but also the likes, dislikes and where our video was viewed the most e.g. facebook, twitter. As shown by the graph from the statistics the number of views of our teaser trailer is getting higher and higher at faster rate. This is a good sign as it shows the longer our  teaser trailer has been available to the public the higher amount of views  become. The fast rate in which it is increase tells us that our promotion tactics are working and more people are finding out about our trailer.

The highest source of views for our teaser trailer was from facebook altogether making 98 views out of our current 423 views. This tells us that facebook was the most sufficient method of promoting our teaser trailer and is defiantly a method that would be used again if we were to every do this project again.

The second highest source of where our teaser trailer was viewed was youtube, being at 76 views which just shows again how beneficial youtube is for promotion. Despite facebook obtaining more views then youtube itself, youtube was the real reason we obtained all the views and feedback that we have gotten. Without youtube we wouldn’t have achieved the 423 views we have today. Youtube allowed us to easily post are video on many social networking sites such as facebook, twitter, mobile phones and any other devices that can access youtube. It would be almost impossible to know the total number of views we really achieved if all these social network sites and devices were not linked to youtube. Views are really important because if no one was to view our teaser trailer then we wouldn’t have any comments, likes and other forms of feedback for our teaser trailer.

The “like” and “dislike” option available on a youtube video is a quick method for viewers to state whether they enjoyed the video or not. This is a good option because not everybody who watches the video will have time or will be bothered to leave a comment but instead can quickly press the like or dislike button. Our video received a total of 14 likes overall which is more confirmation that are video was liked by the public.

One of the viewers that watched our teaser trailer even made this trailer a “favourite” in their youtube video playlists. This means that out of all the millions of videos available on youtube our teaser trailer is one of their favourite. We was very happy to see that someone has taken a great liking to something that we have worked hard to create and gave us a real sense of a accomplishment.

The third highest source of where our teaser trailer was viewed was from a mobile device  with 39 views which is not bad and definitely did contribute to our views. If it wasn’t for the cleverness of mobile phones today and blackberry messenger then we certainly wouldn’t of received those extra views. This is because without blackberry messenger we wouldn’t have been able to easily send multiple people a direct link to our youtube video without a computer. Thanks to blackberry messenger we were able to send multiple people a link to our teaser trailer and blackberry messenger being on all blackberry phones it would allow them to watch, comment and like our teaser trailer without having to access a computer.

The image above is our teaser trailers audience retention, one of the video statistics that youtube allows a user to view is to check the audience retention on their videos. Audience retention shows the percentage of people who stay and watch your video till it’s done. This was a good way of seeing if our teaser trailer was successful or not because it allowed us to see out of all the people who watched our teaser trailer, who actually found it entertaining and stuck around to the end. Having lots of views is worthless if people stopped watching after 10 seconds because they were bored. The real length of our teaser trailer was 30 seconds as the last 5 seconds was a fade to black with closing music. So at around half way through our teaser trailer at 15 seconds 89% of the people who started watching our teaser trailer enjoyed what they had seen so far and kept watching. At the end of our teaser trailer at 30 seconds this percentage went slightly down to 85% but is still very impressive. At 34 seconds the percentage massively drops as people realise the teaser trailer is finish. So by the respective end of our teaser trailer we managed to maintain 85% of our viewers which is really good. This means that we succeeded in producing a interesting and exciting teaser trailer.

This image shows the amount of views we received in each country that viewed our teaser trailer even if it was only one person, which is exactly what can be seen in our views. This shows us that our teaser trailer was mainly successful in the U.K which tells us that if we were to release this type of movie if it was a real film the U.K would be a good place to show our movie. Unfortunately youtube doesn’t offer the ability to see where in the U.K you video has been viewed the most, which would have been really helping as it could suggest promotion locations.

63.1% of the people that viewed are teaser trailer happened to be female; we didn’t target a specific gender in the production of our teaser trailer so we weren’t really bothered by this. We do however have to take into account that three out of the four members of this group are females so they are expected to have more female friends. We were happy to see however that 58% of the people who viewed are teaser trailer were between the ages of 18-24 which means we were successful in reaching our target audience of 18+.

Looking at all the comments and likes we received from YouTube it is clear to us that our teaser trailer seemed to do very with our target audience.

As we can see from the comments our viewers really liked the editing of the teaser trailer. People felt the teaser trailer was scary and “creepy”  this means that we did a good job in making our target audience recognise our product genre, which was a  psychological horror. This means that we used are conventions correctly such as sound, costume and make up which is talked about in question one of our evaluation.

We have no negative comments so we couldn’t give any feedback of what was not liked about our teaser trailer. So in order to get feedback on what was not liked about our teaser trailer we had to show are classmates and people around the college what they would change and what they didn’t like about our teaser trailer.

Facebook is a good way of getting feedback as friends and

family can easily view, comment and like everything you post,

however because they are our family and friends they may

not give complete feedback about the negatives of our teaser

trailer because they do not want to put us down. This is why

youtube was a great place to receive feedback because you

don’t know the people who are commenting so they will give

truthful feedback. All we received from youtube was positive

comments which tells us are teaser trailer was good but

doesn’t tell us what we need to improve on. If the good

outweighs the bad sometimes people can forget about the bad

things.

So to acquire some truthful and unbiased feedback we began asking our fellow class members and other people around the college what they thought about our teaser trailer. From this feedback we have learn't that some people felt that is was not long enough and they wanted more, whether this is negative or not is uncertain as this is a teaser trailer and is meant to tease our target audience into wanting more. Despite this they certainly did enjoy it, another comment raised is that we should have spent more time on our production logo but it was really not that big of a deal. This is something we have taken on board and would defiantly be improved if we were this project again and produce a more efficient teaser trailer.

Question 4: How did you use Media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Planning and Research (Development + Pre Production)

Movie Teaser Tailer (Production/Filming)
In our group we decided to practice using video cameras and still cameras in order to have more experience for the real filming. Through trying the video cameras and still cameras we were able to understand how to use the equipment and assemble track, tripods without the aid of our teachers. Through taking pictures with the still camera we are able to check the white balance, focus, ISO, Depth of field. We had trouble with the lighting because of we shot the scenes in daylight and wanted to create the scene dark.
Below are videos with trials on our experience during the filming and production of our teaser trailer. The videos include Lighting practice, Test shots, Shooting of ideas trial.

Movie poster & Movie Magazine Front Cover (Print production/Advertising)

When creating our poster and magazine the main software that we used was photoshop to edit images, add special effects in order to create our print media. We had previous knowledge of photoshop from our AS projects to create a  music magazine, we were able to use simple tools to brighten the image, cropping and the brushes. However, we felt that that wasn't enough and therefore used youtube to learn out to create other effext such as burning the image, hue and saturation, adding shadows and blurs and distorting images. Youtube played an important part because once we learnt how to used the tools we were able to quickly make the print media with confidence, and to make our print media unique. photoshop made it easier for us to manipulate a fairly ordinary image in to an image that is suitable for a horror poster or magazine, we wanted to green tint to our magzine and poster and although we used a green gel to create a green tint when taking photos, we didn't completely get the effect we wanted. Therefore we used hue and saturation and brightness and contrast to create the final effect that we wanted.

We also used a website called DaFont which enabled us to choice from a variety of different fonts instead of using the standard photoshop fonts. After several trials and errors we found the perfect font for the name of the film, we decided we needed something sharp and scratchy that match the sub genre of the horror film. Afterwards we were able to find other font for the coverlines and heading of the magazine. By downloading the fonts we were able to change the size and distort and warp the fonts so font represented our film which is meant to leave the audience uneased.

Evaluation (Post-Production)
The editing system we used to create our teaser trailer was Final Cut Pro, we used final cut pro to select all the footage that was filmed using the… camera.

For the creation of our teaser trailer we used a number of programmes in order to create our final product. One of these programmes was Final Cut Pro an editing software exclusively for Apple Mac computers produced by Apple. Final Cut Pro is an advance editing programme and is used by real filmmakers in the media industry. After our filming was complete we used final cut pro to import all our footage, once this was done we could now being to edit are footage to create are teaser trailer. Final Cut Pro offered a variety of tools and was difficult to use at first but with my past editing skills and extra research into final cut pro we quickly became familiar with them and final cut pro as a whole. In our teaser trailer we used many of the tools that final cut pro had to offer in order for us to create a true horror teaser trailer. First of all the cut tool was used to produce our rough cut which was the exact footage we were going to use in our teaser trailer. We wanted each scene that was shown in our teaser trailer to have a dark feel to it to truly capture the elements of a teaser trailer so the video filter tool was used to apply some effects such as tints and change the brightness and contrast. Video transitions were a useful tool that was used to create tensions and suspense at certain parts of the teaser trailer, with fades and flashes.

Another programme we used for the production of our teaser trailer was motion. We used motion to create captions for our teaser trailer because it offered a wider range of special effects and fonts we could use for our captions. We wanted our captions to fit in with our teaser trailer so it had to have that dark creepy feel to it, final cut pro already had its own tool to allow us to create captions but motion was a more advance programme which allowed us to do much more.

The third programme that was used to create our teaser trailer was Soundtrack pro. A useful feature of soundtrack pro is that it is compatible with final cut pro so that when we were creating the soundtrack for our teaser trailer we was able to import our video from final cut pro and watch it as we create our soundtrack. This was useful because it allowed us to visual see when a different sound was needed and also how long a certain sound would need to be because you can visual compare it with your video. Soundtrack pro offered a range of different sound effects such as instruments, foley sounds and many more.
