 Film Trailer

·         Film Title: Mirrors
·         Year of release: 2008
·         Director: Alexandre Aja
·         Producer: Alexandra Milchan
·        Production/Financing Company: Castel Film
·         Actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Paula Patton & Amy Smart
·         Synopsis: An ex-cop and his family are the target of an evil force that is using mirrors as a gateway into their home. The film was originally scripted as a remake of the 2003
South Korean horror film Into the Mirror which is rated PG. However, once Aja was brought on board and read the script, he was dissatisfied with the particulars of the original film's story. He decided to retain the original film's basic idea involving mirrors, and to incorporate a few of its scenes, but otherwise crafted a new story and script for his version of the movie
This textual analysis will be focused on the teaser trailer of Mirrors which was distributed by Castel Film. The duration of this teaser trailer is 52 seconds which almost reaches the average length of any normal teaser trailer.
The trailer begins with an establishing shot of a warm family home during the autumn season; the scene is brief and peaceful. However a quick shot shows an over the shoulder shot of a woman- mother like figure opening the door to see her child sitting in front of the mirror, the digetic sound of the child’s voice is cleverly used to fire up anticipation of what will happen to the child in the play, the fast tempo non digetic music gives an eerie feeling to those who are watching the teaser trailer.
The shot that follows is a brief shot of a man frightened by the noise he can hear in the background, the audience is left to assume something is out there to attack the cast in the movie. The next shot shows a dark screen with words ‘within these walls’ this is a genius way to tell a bit of the story but not too much to leave the audience to ponder what goes on within the walls.
After another fade, there is a short cut of a terrified young female walking towards a door; we see this through her non verbal communication and which is shown through shot reverse shots showing the door and the young lady. This shot is interesting due to the undeniable fact of the audience thinking what is going to happen next, the location where this scene was shot is dark which follows the conventions of a horror movie.  A female characters voice is heard, where she says ‘I’m scared’, this gives the idea that we fear what we can not see. After this shot another dark screen with quotes fades in and reads ‘lives an evil’. This technique is used to create a montage of what will happen in the movie, the short quotes are used cleverly to keep the audience searching for answers in the next shot and urging them to watch the movie, when it is out.
The sound used in this teaser trailer is non digetic sound with music slowly building up; the music is matched with the characters voice digetic sounds. One of the popular themes that take place through the trailer is use of the title screen and camera shots. They are interesting in the aspect of this type of technique isn’t used in any other film genres, the audience pay attention to the characters and the titles that are included.
The idea of connecting with the character in the trailer is intelligently used by shooting many point of view shot; this made it feel real and allows the audience to be involved. During the teaser an example of the point of view shot is when the mother is talking to her son, and when the female character is walking towards the door exploring the house, the point of view shot makes it seem as if we the audience are exploring it with them, this scene is created to shock the audience with the scene that follows.
Pace is significant in any horror trailer, and must be thoroughly thought out when developing a teaser trailer. The beginning of the teaser starts with an unhurried pace, possibly a welcoming feeling for the audience, this is shown by what we see and hear. The teaser trailer then builds until it ends with a climatic finish. In the middle of the trailer the pace will be erratic which is a great way to build tension for those watching the trailer. The erratic pace starts 20 seconds into the teaser which suggests the movie may be action packed and thrilling.
Fades are replaced with quick cuts. The pace has been changed into a chaotic stage; most of the short cuts are close up, or over the shoulder shots and long shots. The close up gives an analytical view of the characters emotion and allows us to see things closely, for example the bloody hand that appeared in the bath , the over the shoulder shot of the image of a monster in the mirror and a close up of the little child raising his head to the sound of danger. Long shot was used in this teaser to. show the location the character is in. however all these shots do not last more than 6 seconds, this is the key to a success of a teaser trailer because it keeps the audience guess and grips the audience and leaves them guessing what is going to happen next. All the shots are filmed in low lighting which gives a dark scenery and Darkness connotes the feeling of fear, mainly because we can not see, therefore it remains unknown, and humans tend to fear what they do not know or what they can not see.
The power of sound allows the audience to hear what is going on through the cries of help, screams and dialogues in the teaser.  The sound in the teaser sounds like a slowed heartbeat and is in sync with all the cuts of the trailer. The dialogue tells a story but not to much, a female character cries ‘I am scared’ this creates fear and anticipation into what is going to happen next. The sound of a woman screaming and a child talking are all heard with the growing backing score which will reach its climatic peak.
The title of the movie appears, but then fades out to another scene where a shot reverse shot is used in a high angle position to capture the mother looking down on her child and the child looking up at her while he is being sucked in my the water. This can establish a connection with the characters and audience.  The scene ends with a dramatic loud roar which then cuts to the release date.
To conclude, after analysing the elements and conventions of a teaser trailer, I came to understand that the power of editing is a huge task, this is important because this is what will excite and encourage the audience to watch the film. A teaser is not the plot of an entire film it’s to tease the audience to what will happen if they should watch the film. After watching the teaser, you can always get more information through the website or posters. The trailer is played before the release to create awareness and advertise to horror fans their new film.

Movie Magazine

Fangoria is an internationally-distributed US film fan magazine specializing in the genres of horror, slashersplatter and exploitation films, in regular publication since 1979. The company for this magazine is ‘The Brooklyn company inc’. and is issued every month 10 issues annually.
Fangoria has sponsored annual horror movie conventions known as the Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Chicago (with Austin, Texas added in 2008) these conventions were produced in association with Creation Entertainment. After breaking ties with Creation
in 2009, Fangoria began their own conventions, titling them the "Trinity of Terrors."
In 1991, Fangoria began honoring horror cinema with their annual Chainsaw Awards, which were voted on by readers of their magazine. The winners were announced at an awards show in Los Angeles,California, which was produced by Fangoria's managing editor, Michael Gingold. While the Chainsaw Awards continued in the magazine, the awards show was stopped after 1996.
The denotation of this magazine is  of a full length picture of a masked man and a chainsaw, the title at the left side of the picture title ‘The Texas chainsaw massacre- the beginning’ The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a 1974 American independent horror film directed and produced by Tobe Hooper, who co wrote it with Kim Henkel. The character on the front page of this magazine, is lifting a prop; the chain saw as if he is about to saw an object or a human being; the lighting used in this shot there is low key from an high angle to not show the face of the man entirely, however high key lighting is used to show the chainsaw and the blood and scars on the arms of the man and the machine. The color of the scheme of the magazine seems to be red yellow black and white; this is pleasing to the eye and there isn’t clashing. The red and black co notates death, and blood and the yellow on the front page gives a sense of vibrancy to attract the horror fan audiences.
The layout of the text and fonts shows some sort of disorganization and irregularity which makes the magazine appealing and fun to look at with so many things going on. The background of the magazine is the setting of the film featured on the front page, which is an intelligent way to sell the new movie and urging customers to read the monthly magazines, in hope to know more about the film. The red and yellow colors clash however complements each other due to the colors being bright and bold.
The masthead’s font is similar to ‘Arial’ font however they may have paid more attention to the ‘A’s to stamp their trademark or signatures look on the product-the magazine. The ‘A’ look like eyes that are watching you. And co notates fear in a person’s eyes. The red masthead supports the horror genre because red is mainly associated with blood and gore, it also goes along well with the color theme of the magazine. The release date is in the top right corner next to the masthead, the month is September a month before Halloween, this is strategic because everyone will be getting ready for the celebration and more information towards that period will be vital and interesting to read and know about. The issue number is #256 which shoes they are loyal publishers to their horror fans, right under the publishing number is a small image of a man in pain and exhaustion we can see this through non verbal communication. The web address is placed below the barcode in an estimated font size of 10; it is in white to stand out from the entire buzz on the magazine. The main cover line for this article is the title of the movie they are advertising. The font color is an off white color with streaks of yellow around the words. The design for the title is subtle yet distinctive, which is a clever approach with all the fun on the magazine.
On the left hand side, there are cover lines of what you will discover in the magazine; there are films like the grudge 2, snakes on the plane and the covenant. All these films are also known to be popular films that many horror fans will be interested in; this shows that this magazine specializes in reviewing the commercial films and keeps all their fans updated.

The cover lines are all placed on the left hand side easy to see however the picture of the man with the chainsaw draws more focus and the left hand side are left to be read last. The big yellow slanted cover line ' How the buzz began' entices the audience and makes them want to know about the buzz they are hinting on the front page. The bar code below tells us that it is up for purchase. Other adverts include winning freebies,  this is a clever way to draw more horror fans to buy the margarine. the horror magazine even has a radio show to promote any new horror movies and keep fans updated, since their magazine is published monthly.

Posters are a large factor in the films production, it is very important to have a poster, so before the film is due to be released; people already have a sense of awareness of the film. Film posters are displayed on billboards, in magazines of certain genre, on the internet and on the sides of buses. This scheme is to sell the film, persuade and create awareness for people.
This particular poster could be described as a teaser poster because very little information is released on the poster. The tag line has been included and the text is a basic Arial font and all the letters are in capital letters with only a quotation mark as punctuation. The font is in white which I think symbolises purity; this can be seen as a hint to the story. In most horror movies the good one survives and the tag line is probably quoted from the good character from the movie. The colours used in this poster is mainly black with white text and the title of the film in red, this is an example of conventions of horror and it co notates a horror theme. This is specific to the simplicity of the poster. When we think of the colour black we predominately associate the colour to death, darkness, and fear or sorrow this all links to the film. There is a glow at the top of the page to highlight the character pictured in the middle of the poster; this can be seen as mystery and misery seen through the characters bloodshot eyes.  The red in the characters eyes symbolizes blood and death which is also a link to horror films.
There isn’t a prop used in the poster which probably means the movie poster doesn’t want to give too much away to the audience, the characters image is placed in the middle of the poster with the black background taking priority. This is cleverly done to create suspense and fear which is shown through the facial expression.  The image appears simple which creates attentiveness and the audience viewing this poster to want to know more about what is going to happen in the movie. Looking at this poster gives the sense of judgement it is for horror film lovers and to an older audience
This poster accomplishes the main purpose of hypnotising the horror movie audience to want to watch the film. This is done in different ways by, the image of the unknown actor featured in the poster, the extent of torture shown through the characters blurred facial expression giving a eerie feeling to the poster and the person looking at it. The text colour gives a sense of a thriller horror tone to. The viewing date should have been enlarged because it is quite difficult to see and people may just ignore it and miss the launch date.

 Film Trailer

Film: Hostel II
Year Of Realease: 2007
Director: Eli Roth
Producer: Chris Briggs
Star Actors:  Lauren Germain, Heather Matarazzo and Bijou Phillips.
Background Information: Three American college students studying abroad are lured to a Slovakian hostel, and discover the grim reality behind it.

This textual analysis I will be writing about is Hostel II. The teaser trailer is approximately 40 seconds long as is about the average length of a teaser trailer. Screen Gems distributed the film trailer I will be analysing, which is under the arm of the company Lionsgate.

The teaser trailer begins with the camera fading up and down showing different weapons that are shown to have killed people in the past. Along with these shots there are captions giving facts about the country and also the deaths that have taken place. Also there is diagetic sound that is been played, this sound is somewhat slow which gives a feel of it been scary. Also a voice over is speaking; this is in a foreign language, which is the reason for the caption and it also gives people an idea of where the film may be shot. The voice of the man saying the voice over is deep and slow the man also laughs at certain times, which gives a scary feel to it. As this goes on the sound also builds up; with this sound effect it makes the audiences suspense build up until when it then changes.

After this the shot then changes to a black shot to where there is more caption, with this it then shows a long shot of all the weapons that are used to kill people. At this point the diagetic sound then builds up to grab the audiences suspense. Non-diagetic sound is used with men using machines and laughing, this shows that the people killing people others are finding it funny this gives people a feel that they are heartless.

It then fades to black and shows the title of the film along with a loud shout. From this it makes the audience want to watch the film so they are able to find out what happen next.

In conclusions, from analysing this teaser trailer I was able to see that editing even short trailers takes a lot of time and effort. The shots have to be precise and all editing has to be times properly. The trailer was realized about a month or two before the film was resale. This was to give an awareness of the film coming out and this would mean by word of mouth information would spread and more people would wan to watch the film.

Textual Analysis – Horror Teaser Trailer
Film Title: The Hills have Eyes ll
Year of release: 2007
Director: Martin Weisz
Producers: Wes Craven, Johnathan Debin, Peter Locke
Production/Finance Company; Fox Atomic
Actors: Daniella Alonso, Jacob Vargas and Michael Bailey Smith
Synopsis: A team of trainees from the National Guard go to New Mexico Desert to bring supplies for a soldiers and scientists, instead the find nobody in the camp and receive a blurred distressed signal from the hillls. Their sergeant gathers a rescue team, and they are attacked and trapped by deformed cannibals, having to fight to survive.

This textual analysis will be focused on the Teaser Trailer of The Hills have Eyes, which was distributed by Fox Atomic. The duration of the teaser trailer is 65 seconds which is the usual length of a normal teaser trailer.

The trailer begins with an establishing shot of the New Mexico desert, which consist with both wide and long short characteristics as we are able to see the whole view of the hills. Then a close up of an old boat appears in the scene, with the camera in the same position as the establishing shot. The man appears to be struggling to drag something, the camera is still fixed in the same position and the man is walking away from the camera until there is a long shot view of the man dragging something. He carries on walking toward the hill and the audience finally see him dragging a dead body, which is covered up, at 28 second you can see a wide shot of the man dragging a body. The focus is still on the man dragging the body, until at 33seconds another old boot come into the scene. Just like the first boot there was a close up of it, and then he also walks away from the camera heading towards the hill, in this scene there is amore focus of the rope getting tighter. Then at 39seconds the camera that was at the same position, tilts into a canted shot, as well as using point eye view to suggest that we are seeing the view of a victim. The camera tracks the second man as if being pulled whilst still having a canted shot. At 49 second the people fade and all is left is a fading canted shot of the hills and a title screen of the hills have eyes 2.

The sound used in this trailer is non diegetic sound, the music score that was used was a song called insect eye by Devendra Banhart who is known for his weird and freaky folk style music. The music worked very well with the teaser trailer because it the folk style music relates to a desert, and the music lyrics were chilling which works well with a horror teaser trailer. As well as using music score, the use Foley sound affects to emphasize the sound of footsteps. This was effective because it makes the audience believe that they are actually there.

This is also made more believable because of the point of view shots; we were able to see exactly that same view as the victim being dragged which made it much more believable so we are able to connect with the character and therefore much scarier. Point eye view was intelligently used throughout out the whole fill with out knowledge until the part when the camera looked as it was being dragged. This also meant that we didn’t se the character which creates a sense of suspense and eagerness to find out about the characters.

The pace of the film is slow compared many other teaser trailers, there is little use of fades and quick cuts, which in this case makes it easier for understand the plot, also it give the sense that time hasn’t passed by and that the ordeal is never ending, as if you have been kidnapped, which is appropriate for this movie trailer.

Movie  poster

Posters are important in film production because it is was ay to inform people about the film but most importantly to advertise the film. The poster should represent what the will is about and most importantly teaser the audience. Film poster can be displayed any where from underground stations, bus stopn newspaper, bilboards and the internet, therefore the poster needs to bold and standour to draw the audences attention.

The poster is a long shot  as it show the whole scenery and someone dragging something that isn't clear to the audience. The person appears to be looking towards the Hills which suggest that the hills is their destination. The shot is a canted shot, which is commonly used in Horror posters to give an impression of off balance, that something is right or normal, it also makes the audience fell unease because they aromatically sense that some thing is wrong. Also the focus of the poster is on the left as the main image of the poster is on that side while the title of the film and the release date is on the right, this again shows unbalance and also conotates a lack of control.

The setting of the poster is in a desert, where there are hills in the background. The setting of the poster is appropriate because of the name of the film, the title gives a clue to the audience that the setting of the film is going to be near the hills. The overall colour scheme of the poster is focused on a sandy and desert brown and yellows, although it is different from many other horror posters, as they usually use black, grey, red and and white, this poster is effective due to the continuity between the trailer and the poster. They use the same colour scheme and the same setting.

From the poster we can see somebody who is wearing dirty and ripped up clothes and very dirty dragging something of the floor, we can not clearly distinguish what the person is dragging on the floor. Also we do not see the face of the person that we presume to be the antagonist because from the back looks like a monster. This is effective because it don't give anything away, the poster creates suspense because the audience would want to know who is the person dragging the object, what is is? a human , monster and why? Therefore the trailer is effectively teasing the audience. From looking at the object being dragged, we can presume that a human / victim i being dragged, again the clothes are dirty and looks like rags, which suggest that they have been there for a long time. Coming out of the person being dragged is a hand, what is strange is the position of the hand,  instead of being near the chest, it is where the legs should be. This may be representing mutation as the film is about mutant who live on the hills.

Text used on the poster is san serif font and is white, this is common in horror teaser trailers as it as bold colour and  could represent in this case innocence. The size of the font isn't fixed some are bigger than the other with stand out words Hills and Eyes, this could give an insight to what the film is about, these people on the hills are watch their targets.

The poster is an effective teaser poster as it doesn't give to much away to the audience, it standout compared to other horror movie posters because it doesn't follow the generic colour schemes of horror movie posters and doesn't show us the faces of the character if the film, which leaves the audience guessing the roles of the two people seen in the poster. Also the trailer and poster match each other which shows consistency which is important when promoting a film.

Movie Magazine

The Horror magazine detonates a medium shot of a doll with scars and a knife, with the masthead in the center of the magazine and in the bottom left of the picture is the main cover line, which includes the title of the film. On the left of the picture is a strip of pictures of other horror films and underneath that is the bar code of the magazine. On top of the Masthead is the selling price and magazine issue code/number and above that is the selling line, at the bottom if the picture is the website address.

The character that we see is a doll with scars on his face which automatically suggest that it is the antagonist as well as  the way that it is laughing at the camera which is likely to scare the audience.  The main focus of the magazine is on the character's face hence why it is placed in  the center where it is the main focus, also the high key lighting on the characters face also enhances this.  The use of the scars on the dolls face suggest to the audience that the character is evil, because normal doll don't have scars, and is a far cry from the dolls that you usually see in a shop. The doll is also carrying a knife as a prop, which may represent his main killing or attacking weapon, when looking at the knife toy can see the image of the doll as a reflection. Although it looks like a reflection, it may represent spirits of the feeling of being trapped, which is shown in the film.
The colour scheme of the magazine is yellow black white and red which are the generic colours for horror magazines and poster, this colour scheme is also used in Fangoria's magazines. The black represents isolation and loneliness, while the red represents blood, white and yellow presents spirits. The main cover line is placed on the bottom left of the picture which creates a feeling of disorganisation as if there isn't a control, this could symbolism that characters personality, that the doll doesn't have full control of himself and who it chooses to attack.

The masthead font is big and placed in the center so it is easily recognizable for the audience, the use of the colour red also shows that it is a horror poster as it is mainly associated with blood and gore and supports the colour scheme of the magazine. The release date of the magazine and the selling price is on top of the masthead in a small white font. his is there to inform the customers that it is a monthly magazine therefore is only released once a month  and also to show the price. It may be a marketing technique to make the price as small as possible so the the audience can focus on the magazine rather than the price because the magazine is rather expensive. The web address is placed on the bottom right of the magazine because it is easy to see when turning the page, by  putting he website on the magazine the audience will be able to stay loyal to the company and look at any updates because they wouldn't receive all updated due to the fact that it is a month magazine. The main cover line of the magazine is about the film they are promoting, the colours also match the colour theme of the magazine, the magazine may have adapted their usual colour theme to match the colour theme of the film.
The main cover line for this article is the title of the movie they are advertising. The font color is an off white color with streaks of yellow around the words. The design for the title is subtle yet distinctive, which is a clever approach with all the fun on the magazine.

On the left hand side, there are cover lines of what you will discover in the magazine; there are other horror films l, however the main focus is on Child's Play and therefore made sure that the images and the cover lines didn't over shadow the main focus, they did this my making sure that the images were all on one side and were small so they didn't distract the audience.

Following the tragic accident of their child strange events have been taking place in their home. Forcing themselves there’s logical explanations for all this seems to get them by, until the two are sure that something or someone is causing these events. The couple and their other younger son decide to move to get away from all this. Until after settling in their new house realise events are happening again and there getting worse. This leads them to seek outside help which brings them to the situation were its not there house that’s haunted it’s their son.

Poster play very important part in the in the production of a film, a poster is used to advertise and raise awareness about a film this can be done by displaying them upon billboards, in newspapers, on buses and even on the internet. They have to use a range of techniques and devices in their poster to make people want to see the film.

This poster for example uses a calm medium key lighting for the centre of the poster which from a far creates peaceful feeling about the poster. But the longer you look at this poster you can see that there some things wrong about this house. The obvious thing that you can spot is the white electrical sparks coming out the child’s eyes. This creates a large mystery about the poster straight away. The edges of the poster are covered in low key lighting smoke which seems to be consuming the house. This tells the audience viewing the poster that there is something very wrong with this house and makes them interested to find out what. This dark low key lighting also creates a grim feeling to its viewers.
One other disturbance harder to spot is in the left window there is a figure of a demon, for viewers that actually spot this, this could actually get them scared already. Making your horror movies scary is a good technique that makes the audience think if this scared me then the actual film must be terrifying. This will actually get them excited just by viewing the poster and may cause word of mouth to kick in to action, making people talk more and more about the film causing hype over it.
Another good technique used in this poster is it’s anchorage, anchorage is good because it allows written text to display on the poster. It can’t contain much so what is said has to be very effective. This poster happens to do this very well, at the top of the poster is shown “From the makers of SAW and Paranormal Activity”. These are two very well known and successful films in the horror industry and will bring much attention to the viewers of this poster. It will bring even more attention to this poster because they are two very different types of horror films and will make both fans interested on what the two makers can produce together. Using past films in anchorage is very useful when then films mentioned have been successful because it will attract all of the films fans.
Its second great use of anchorage is its review like “So scary I was whimpering in sheer terror” this was by a known movie reviewer Robbie Collin from News Of The World. The film was given a brilliant 5 stars which can be clearly seen in the poster. This will tell the audience of this poster that it will definitely not be a waste of money and defiantly a film to go and watch. Under the title is the tagline of the film “It’s not the house that’s haunted” this causes the audience to think wonder what is actual haunted. The font used in this poster is very similar to the font used in the Paranormal Activity posters which makes it very familiar to the audience.

I believe this poster accomplishes the main roles of a teaser poster very well which is to advertise and cause awareness to its audience. It had a range of techniques used to bring more attention to the poster. Using the simplest of techniques included lighting, font, tag lines and general mysteries in the image it self this poster was able to create a grim chilling feeling and definitely cause word of mouth among the viewers of this poster.
